Philadelphia Eagles vs New England Patriots live

The Eagles are confident they can score points on the Patriots’ defense. The Pats gave up 18.5 points a game and the Eagles 18.4. Because of Patriots quarterback Tom Brady’s uncanny ability to quickly find the available receiver, Philadelphia must exert pressure with its front four, leaving more defenders to mix and match pass coverage. So it is a good sign for Philadelphia that the Eagles compiled 33 of 38 sacks with their front four in the regular season (35 of 42 including postseason). Defensive tackles Fletcher Cox and Tim Jernigan can collapse the pocket, allowing edge rushers to harass from the outside, as did defensive end Brandon Graham, who led the team with 9.5 sacks.

MATCHUPS TO WATCH:

–Patriots S Patrick Chung vs. Eagles TE Zach Ertz. Chung is one of the Patriots’ most versatile and trusted defenders, but he’s coming off a tough game, especially early on against Jacksonville when he allowed an easy touchdown to TE Marcedes Lewis. Chung will very much be in the mix covering Ertz, who not only led the Eagles with 74 catches for 824 yards and eight scores during the regular season, but had a game-high 93 yards on eight catches in the NFC title game.

–Patriots Gs Joe Thuney and Shaq Mason, and C David Andrews vs. Eagles DTs Fletcher Cox and Tim Jernigan. Cox, who had 5.5 sacks during the season, is the linchpin of Philadelphia’s line. Often unblockable, he can wreck a game. Jernigan is also a big help, and has recovered from an illness. Andrews will likely have to help on Cox, but the line will have to work to keep the pocket clean for QB Tom Brady.

Philadelphia Eagles vs New England Patriots

Philadelphia update: A city best known for a broken bell and a cheesesteak—which, in its traditional form, is not made with cheese, but with Cheez Whiz, the second worst kind of Whiz—is not a place with high expectations. In fact, one of the most common civic discussions in Philly is “Do you smell that? It smells like—oh, gawd, do you smell that?Philadelphia Magazine ran a piece called “Philadelphia: Worst Smelling City in America?” That was followed by the Passyunk Post, which asked, “What is that cat-urine smell in parts of South Philly?” Which led to PhillyVoice’s investigation “Does your Philly tap water smell like moldy lemons?” Which led to lots of Philadelphians asking.
New England update: You have real hatred for the New England Patriots, and you are confused. Afterall, the region is not only the birthplace of our country, such as it is, but it’s also pretty blue—not like California (how’s my blue taste, Central Valley?), but blue enough. So why the hate for the Patriots? Look, you’re a feeling human being, and the Patriots are a soul-sucking blight upon the cultural landscape, you know, like cancer and Pokémon GO. The question isn’t why you hate the Patriots, but rather if you don’t hate the miserable, smug, Cheater McCheatersons, then why do you also like cancer?

Live 2018

The Philadelphia Eagles will host the New England Patriots Sunday (Monday AEDT) in the NFC vs AFC Live Championship Game at the Lincoln Financial Field. The Eagles, pursuing their first trip to the Super Bowl since 2004, will be without star quarterback Carson Wentz, who underwent ACL surgery in Dec. 2017.

The Pro Bowl is taking place this Sunday in Orlando, and many of the better NFL players from all over are in town to practice and spend a week having some fun in Florida.

Of course, there are plenty of snubs (*ahem* David Bakhtiari) and injured players (too many to count) who are not participating, along with the players from both Super Bowl teams. Still, the Green Bay Packers have two representatives in the game in wide receiver Davante Adams and defensive lineman Mike Daniels.

Both of those two Packers were part of Thursday’s Pro Bowl Skills Challenge, and although they performed well, they couldn’t do quite enough to lead the NFC to a victory over the AFC.

Meanwhile, we’re not usually a blog that crosses sports all that much, but Thursday’s news out of Milwaukee is too big to ignore. The Brewers made a pair of massive acquisitions yesterday, adding two All-Star caliber outfielders in a push to make a big playoff surge in 2018.

Check out those items and more in today’s Curds, and keep an eye out for our review of the Packers’ 2017 roster, which will be starting up on Monday.

What They’re Saying About The Eagles: NFCCG Volume I, AFC Fan Reactions

Welcome to the NFCCG AFC Edition of WTS.
Well, we’re going to the Super Bowl. I’m not worried, especially after comparing both team’s starting QB’s, as highlighted in the graphic below:

That’s right. Regardless, most folks are rooting for the Eagles in this one. Brady and his Sith Overlord coach have experienced enough fortune, and it’s time to pass the reigns. From what I’ve read, national SB rooting can be fairly summed up by the graphic below:

I would’ve expected nothing less.

On a serious note,

I wanted to take a moment to appreciate how far this team has come over the last few years. Since the firing of Andy Reid after the 2012 season and the subsequent Chipocalypse, which led us to the first consecutive losing seasons we’ve had since 1999, we have drafted a franchise QB, hired a franchise defining Head Coach, locked up several All-Pro and Pro-Bowl players to long term contracts, and secured our first Super Bowl birth in 13 years.

That’s not to say we haven’t had our bumps and bruises over the past 2 seasons, but nothing we’ve faced thus far has been able to slow what seems to be a destined path to sustained greatness. Even with the week 14 loss of our Lord and Savior Carson Wentz, we still prospered under the leadership of St. Nick.

I can’t speak for everyone, but I will share my own demons on this. I needed a kick in the ass. A wake up call. Here I was, ready to argue with anyone who didn’t fully believe, yet I had my own doubts. Maybe it’s something built into the DNA of a lifelong, generational Eagles fan, but deep down, I was always waiting for that other shoe to drop. Outwardly, I was proud of our team’s seamless ability to follow the mantra of “next man up”. I used that very line in countless debates, but I’m not sure if I ever actually believed it. And I didn’t realize that until we lost Wentz.

I fretted through the Carolina game without Lane Johnson, the games where Cox was ruled inactive, or Ertz couldn’t play, but still we persevered. Each time we lost another player to IR, from Sproles, Hicks, and JP, to Maragos and Sturgis, I would debate the historical resiliency this team had displayed all season to any nonbeliever, and admonish anyone saying that the next game was the “prove it game”. I swear we heard that shit every week, and I always felt they had proven enough to everyone else. Still, week in and week out, they had to prove themselves to me. Any little issue always felt like the football world was finally unraveling, that the shoe was finally dropping. When Wentz went down, my football heart shattered, and I found myself looking at this 1st seed team that had secured home field advantage throughout the playoffs, like a team that had no chance.

All of the sudden, the mantra of “next man up” no longer seemed to apply, and I found myself making peace with the season that “could have been”. After everything, they still needed to prove themselves. I suppose part of that is understandable, it’s almost build into our fandom to outwardly boast while inwardly breaking down every pattern or mistake in the hopes of identifying the beginning of the end before it crushed our feelings, basically finding that stupid f***ing shoe before it found us. We are a proud people that had been burnt too many times. I remember the 2004 season, and the fervor that surrounded it. Everyone expected us to win. That fervor was lacking going into the Atlanta game, where most assumed we would lose. I watched and yelled and cheered and talked the same shit I usually do, but deep down, I assumed the same. Once again, they proved me wrong.

Then the Vikings came to town, and the only thing people spoke about all week was the Case Keenum story and the vaunted Minnesota defense. And as they marched down the field and easily scored their one and only TD, I thought to myself ‘here we go’. But we won. And not on a fluke play or bad call, but on 3.5 quarters of pure total team dominance. This team had been telling me all season who they were, but I absorbed it as wishful thinking, coach speak, or player politics, never truly understanding how special this season really was.

And now we’re going to the Super Bowl as underdogs for the third straight week, led by a second year Head Coach who had been mocked relentlessly by media and fans alike while starting a backup QB who few believed in. And that’s when it dawned on me.

For us to truly be successful, for us to finally bring it home, it could be no other way.

You’re damn right, random Titan’s fan, You’re damn right.

Ok, serious note over. For those who actually read all of that, kudos to you. I wouldn’t have.

On to the game! This is just the AFC portion, expect the NFC edition out later in the week.

Enjoy!

Davante Adams, Thomas Davis end feud at the Pro Bowl | Packers Wire
Also in Orlando, Adams appears to have buried the hatchet with Davis after the Panthers linebacker apologized for his dirty hit to the head that concussed Adams in week 15. Good for Adams, because if it were me, I’d still be angry.

NFL’s best teams never to win a Super Bowl – ranking all 32 franchises | ESPN
ESPN ranks the 2007 Packers as the best Green Bay team to fail to win the Super Bowl. However, I take issue with that, and would put the 1997 team there in their place; the offensive line and defense of that team were much better than those units on the 2007 squad.

Milwaukee Brewers to sign OF Lorenzo Cain, per report – Brew Crew Ball
In Milwaukee, GM David Stearns made a pair of huge moves on Thursday and is pushing a ton of his chips into the pot to contend in the near term. There should be more moves coming, too, since the Brewers have too many starting outfielders and still need some starting pitching help. Let’s give them some love as we wait to see if Brian Gutekunst will be as aggressive in his first offseason at the helm in Green Bay.

The Eagles, pursuing their first trip to the Super Bowl since 2004, will be without star quarterback Carson Wentz, who underwent ACL surgery in Dec. 2017.

The Eagles will be playing their first NFC Championship Game since the 2008 season. They lost 32-25 to the Arizona Cardinals during their last trip to the final four stages of the postseason. But Eagles coach Doug Pederson realises that his young team could be on the verge of history, even without Wentz.

“It’s about those players in that dressing room, whether we’re three-point underdogs or three-point favorites. They really don’t listen to that stuff. Of course, they have been sort of force-fed for about two weeks now, three weeks now, the information, and they just stick together. They just stick together and find a way and it’s been that way all season,” Pederson said on the eve of the game.

In Wentz’ absence, the Eagles will continue to start reserve quarterback Nick Foles, who made a lot of believers during Philadelphia’s 15-10 victory over Atlanta Falcons in the NFL Divisional playoffs. Foles completed 23 of 30 passes for 246 yards and a 100.1 passer rating as he led Philadelphia to the conference title game.

“I am very humbled to win this game and to be a part of this team. That’s what it’s always been about. I know there was a lot of people against us this last week. Just answering questions, and just hearing about it… The biggest thing in our locker room is we believe in one another. Everyone believes, and that was shown on display. The city of Philadelphia obviously believes because they were here and loud. So we are grateful for that. Honestly, it’s unbelievable to win this game and we are not finished,” said Foles.

The winner of the NFL Championship game will face either the New England Patriots or the Jacksonville Jaguars at Super Bowl 52 on Feb. 4. Since this year’s NFL championship game will be held at the U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota, odds makers expect the Vikings to make their first Super Bowl game since 1976. Eagles vs Vikings live streaming, NFC Championship game live streaming, Eagles live streaming and 2018 NFL Playoffs live streaming info follows.

The Vikings (14-3) advanced following a thrilling 29-24 victory over the New Orleans Saints. Stefon Diggs hauled in a 61-yard touchdown catch from quarterback Case Keenum on the final play of the game Sunday.

Like the Eagles, Minnesota has yet to win a Super Bowl. The Vikings have dropped five consecutive NFC Championship games.

Philadelphia will enter Sunday’s game as an underdog, especially with quarterback Carson Wentz out with a torn ACL.

For decades, the Pro Bowl has been criticized as a glamour event more than a football game. This is due to two causes: the voluntary nature of the game, and the fear of player injury.

Players whose teams advanced to the Super Bowl will not play in the Pro Bowl, and they are replaced by alternate players.

From 2014 to 2016, players did not play according to conference; instead, were placed in a draft pool and chosen by team captains.[14] Since 2017, players per conference are placed into separate draft pools and chosen by their team captains.

Unlike most major sports leagues, which hold their all-star games roughly midway through their respective regular seasons, the Pro Bowl is played around the end of the NFL season. Between 1970 and 2009, it was usually held the weekend after the Super Bowl. Since 2010, the Pro Bowl has been played the weekend before the Super Bowl. Players from the two teams competing in the Super Bowl will not participate.

The trio will be replacing players who are unable to participate. Joseph replaces Fletcher Cox (Philadelphia Eagles), while Rudolph and Smith replace a pair of injured players in Jimmy Graham (Seattle Seahawks) andLandon Collins (New York Giants).

This will be the second Pro Bowl appearance for both Joseph and Rudolph. Rudolph won Pro Bowl MVP honors at the 2012 all-star game.

Smith has now been named to the Pro Bowl each of the last three seasons.

Minnesota has had seven named to the Pro Bowl this season: LB Anthony Barr, DE Everson Griffen, DT Linval Joseph, CB Xavier Rhodes, TE Kyle Rudolph, S Harrison Smith and WR Adam Thielen.

As of the most recent Pro Bowl, the 2017 Pro Bowl, 39 players have been invited to at least ten Pro Bowls in their careers. Except for those that are current active or not yet eligible, each of these players have been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Four players share the record of having been invited to 14 Pro Bowls, the first being Merlin Olsen, followed by Bruce Matthews, Tony Gonzalez, and Peyton Manning.

Currently, players are voted into the Pro Bowl by the coaches, the players themselves, and the fans. Each group’s ballots count for one third of the votes. The fans vote online at the NFL’s official website. There are also replacements that go to the game should any selected player be unable to play due to injuries. Prior to 1995, only the coaches and the players made Pro Bowl selections.

Orlando will host the 2018 Pro Bowl on Sunday, January 28 at 3 p.m. and the game will be televised on ESPN and ABC, the NFL announced Wednesday. Last season, the NFL played its all-star game in Orlando for the first time at Camping World Stadium.
