History
Inside Rod Laver Arena prior to an evening session in 2007
The Australian Open is managed by Tennis Australia, formerly the Lawn Tennis Association of Australia (LTAA), and was first played at the Warehouseman’s Cricket Ground in Melbourne in November 1905. This facility is now known as the Albert Reserve Tennis Centre.

The tournament was first known as the Australasian Championships and then became the Australian Championships in 1927 and the Australian Open in 1969. Since 1905, the Australian Open has been staged in five Australian and two New Zealand cities: Melbourne (55 times), Sydney (17 times), Adelaide (14 times), Brisbane (7 times), Perth (3 times), Christchurch (1906) and Hastings (1912).Though started in 1905, the tournament was not designated as being a major championship until 1924, by the International Lawn Tennis Federation (ILTF) at a 1923 meeting. The tournament committee changed the structure of the tournament to include seeding at that time. In 1972, it was decided to stage the tournament in Melbourne each year because it attracted the biggest patronage of any Australian city. The tournament was played at the Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club from 1972 until the move to the new Melbourne Park complex in 1988.

look out for on day two
Novak Djokovic and his fragile elbow swing into action against the world No63 American Donald Young. The six-time Australian Open winner is last on the Margaret Court Arena in the day session and is seeded 14th mainly because he’s spent half of the previous season out through injury.
On the same court, and in the match immediately before Djokovic, we’ll see how Maria Sharapova gets on. With no Serena Williams around, she has a fair chance of going deep this year. Whether that will prove popular with fans or not is another matter. She plays Tatjana Maria, who is ranked higher than Sharapova but who the Russian should beat.
On the Hisense Arena Johanna Konta, seeded ninth, takes on the world No82 American Madison Brengle, who may feel a little added pressure to do well given how badly the her better known compatriots have performed so far.
And in the evening the Rod Laver Arena welcomes back Roger Federer, who will cruise into action against the sometimes tricky Slovenian, Aljaz Bedene.

What They’re Saying About The Eagles: NFCCG Volume I, AFC Fan Reactions

Welcome to the NFCCG AFC Edition of WTS.
Well, we’re going to the Super Bowl. I’m not worried, especially after comparing both team’s starting QB’s, as highlighted in the graphic below:

That’s right. Regardless, most folks are rooting for the Eagles in this one. Brady and his Sith Overlord coach have experienced enough fortune, and it’s time to pass the reigns. From what I’ve read, national SB rooting can be fairly summed up by the graphic below:

I would’ve expected nothing less.

On a serious note,

I wanted to take a moment to appreciate how far this team has come over the last few years. Since the firing of Andy Reid after the 2012 season and the subsequent Chipocalypse, which led us to the first consecutive losing seasons we’ve had since 1999, we have drafted a franchise QB, hired a franchise defining Head Coach, locked up several All-Pro and Pro-Bowl players to long term contracts, and secured our first Super Bowl birth in 13 years.

That’s not to say we haven’t had our bumps and bruises over the past 2 seasons, but nothing we’ve faced thus far has been able to slow what seems to be a destined path to sustained greatness. Even with the week 14 loss of our Lord and Savior Carson Wentz, we still prospered under the leadership of St. Nick.

I can’t speak for everyone, but I will share my own demons on this. I needed a kick in the ass. A wake up call. Here I was, ready to argue with anyone who didn’t fully believe, yet I had my own doubts. Maybe it’s something built into the DNA of a lifelong, generational Eagles fan, but deep down, I was always waiting for that other shoe to drop. Outwardly, I was proud of our team’s seamless ability to follow the mantra of “next man up”. I used that very line in countless debates, but I’m not sure if I ever actually believed it. And I didn’t realize that until we lost Wentz.

I fretted through the Carolina game without Lane Johnson, the games where Cox was ruled inactive, or Ertz couldn’t play, but still we persevered. Each time we lost another player to IR, from Sproles, Hicks, and JP, to Maragos and Sturgis, I would debate the historical resiliency this team had displayed all season to any nonbeliever, and admonish anyone saying that the next game was the “prove it game”. I swear we heard that shit every week, and I always felt they had proven enough to everyone else. Still, week in and week out, they had to prove themselves to me. Any little issue always felt like the football world was finally unraveling, that the shoe was finally dropping. When Wentz went down, my football heart shattered, and I found myself looking at this 1st seed team that had secured home field advantage throughout the playoffs, like a team that had no chance.

All of the sudden, the mantra of “next man up” no longer seemed to apply, and I found myself making peace with the season that “could have been”. After everything, they still needed to prove themselves. I suppose part of that is understandable, it’s almost build into our fandom to outwardly boast while inwardly breaking down every pattern or mistake in the hopes of identifying the beginning of the end before it crushed our feelings, basically finding that stupid f***ing shoe before it found us. We are a proud people that had been burnt too many times. I remember the 2004 season, and the fervor that surrounded it. Everyone expected us to win. That fervor was lacking going into the Atlanta game, where most assumed we would lose. I watched and yelled and cheered and talked the same shit I usually do, but deep down, I assumed the same. Once again, they proved me wrong.

Then the Vikings came to town, and the only thing people spoke about all week was the Case Keenum story and the vaunted Minnesota defense. And as they marched down the field and easily scored their one and only TD, I thought to myself ‘here we go’. But we won. And not on a fluke play or bad call, but on 3.5 quarters of pure total team dominance. This team had been telling me all season who they were, but I absorbed it as wishful thinking, coach speak, or player politics, never truly understanding how special this season really was.

And now we’re going to the Super Bowl as underdogs for the third straight week, led by a second year Head Coach who had been mocked relentlessly by media and fans alike while starting a backup QB who few believed in. And that’s when it dawned on me.

For us to truly be successful, for us to finally bring it home, it could be no other way.

You’re damn right, random Titan’s fan, You’re damn right.

Ok, serious note over. For those who actually read all of that, kudos to you. I wouldn’t have.

On to the game! This is just the AFC portion, expect the NFC edition out later in the week.

Enjoy!

Live

The Pro Bowl is taking place this Sunday in Orlando, and many of the better NFL players from all over are in town to practice and spend a week having some fun in Florida.

Of course, there are plenty of snubs (*ahem* David Bakhtiari) and injured players (too many to count) who are not participating, along with the players from both Super Bowl teams. Still, the Green Bay Packers have two representatives in the game in wide receiver Davante Adams and defensive lineman Mike Daniels.

Both of those two Packers were part of Thursday’s Pro Bowl Skills Challenge, and although they performed well, they couldn’t do quite enough to lead the NFC to a victory over the AFC.

Meanwhile, we’re not usually a blog that crosses sports all that much, but Thursday’s news out of Milwaukee is too big to ignore. The Brewers made a pair of massive acquisitions yesterday, adding two All-Star caliber outfielders in a push to make a big playoff surge in 2018.

Check out those items and more in today’s Curds, and keep an eye out for our review of the Packers’ 2017 roster, which will be starting up on Monday.

Jarvis Landry leads AFC in Pro Bowl Skills Showdown – NFL.com
The AFC won thanks to some of Landry’s dodgeball heroics. Meanwhile, Davante Adams had a good time in the Best Hands competition and Mike Daniels contributed in the Gridiron Gauntlet.

Davante Adams, Thomas Davis end feud at the Pro Bowl | Packers Wire
Also in Orlando, Adams appears to have buried the hatchet with Davis after the Panthers linebacker apologized for his dirty hit to the head that concussed Adams in week 15. Good for Adams, because if it were me, I’d still be angry.

Packers confident Kevin King will make full recovery from shoulder surgery | Packersnews.com
King had surgery on his torn labrum six weeks ago, but everything looks good and he should be ready for OTAs. The team’s staff hopes and expects that he should have no lasting effects from the injury or the surgery.

NFL’s best teams never to win a Super Bowl – ranking all 32 franchises | ESPN
ESPN ranks the 2007 Packers as the best Green Bay team to fail to win the Super Bowl. However, I take issue with that, and would put the 1997 team there in their place; the offensive line and defense of that team were much better than those units on the 2007 squad.

Milwaukee Brewers acquire OF Christian Yelich for four prospects, including Brinson and Harrison – Brew Crew Ball
Milwaukee Brewers to sign OF Lorenzo Cain, per report – Brew Crew Ball
In Milwaukee, GM David Stearns made a pair of huge moves on Thursday and is pushing a ton of his chips into the pot to contend in the near term. There should be more moves coming, too, since the Brewers have too many starting outfielders and still need some starting pitching help. Let’s give them some love as we wait to see if Brian Gutekunst will be as aggressive in his first offseason at the helm in Green Bay.

The Philadelphia Eagles will host the New England Patriots Sunday (Monday AEDT) in the NFC vs AFC Live Championship Game at the Lincoln Financial Field. The Eagles, pursuing their first trip to the Super Bowl since 2004, will be without star quarterback Carson Wentz, who underwent ACL surgery in Dec. 2017.

The Eagles will be playing their first NFC Championship Game since the 2008 season. They lost 32-25 to the Arizona Cardinals during their last trip to the final four stages of the postseason. But Eagles coach Doug Pederson realises that his young team could be on the verge of history, even without Wentz.

“It’s about those players in that dressing room, whether we’re three-point underdogs or three-point favorites. They really don’t listen to that stuff. Of course, they have been sort of force-fed for about two weeks now, three weeks now, the information, and they just stick together. They just stick together and find a way and it’s been that way all season,” Pederson said on the eve of the game.

In Wentz’ absence, the Eagles will continue to start reserve quarterback Nick Foles, who made a lot of believers during Philadelphia’s 15-10 victory over Atlanta Falcons in the NFL Divisional playoffs. Foles completed 23 of 30 passes for 246 yards and a 100.1 passer rating as he led Philadelphia to the conference title game.

“I am very humbled to win this game and to be a part of this team. That’s what it’s always been about. I know there was a lot of people against us this last week. Just answering questions, and just hearing about it… The biggest thing in our locker room is we believe in one another. Everyone believes, and that was shown on display. The city of Philadelphia obviously believes because they were here and loud. So we are grateful for that. Honestly, it’s unbelievable to win this game and we are not finished,” said Foles.

The winner of the NFL Championship game will face either the New England Patriots or the Jacksonville Jaguars at Super Bowl 52 on Feb. 4. Since this year’s NFL championship game will be held at the U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota, odds makers expect the Vikings to make their first Super Bowl game since 1976. Eagles vs Vikings live streaming, NFC Championship game live streaming, Eagles live streaming and 2018 NFL Playoffs live streaming info follows.

The Vikings (14-3) advanced following a thrilling 29-24 victory over the New Orleans Saints. Stefon Diggs hauled in a 61-yard touchdown catch from quarterback Case Keenum on the final play of the game Sunday.

Like the Eagles, Minnesota has yet to win a Super Bowl. The Vikings have dropped five consecutive NFC Championship games.

Philadelphia will enter Sunday’s game as an underdog, especially with quarterback Carson Wentz out with a torn ACL.

The WWE will hold the 2018 Royal Rumble at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia on January 28. It is going to be a very big event because the WWE is going to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Royal Rumble. The winner of the match will earn a title opportunity, either for the WWE or Universal championship, at WrestleMania 34.

It has been rumored for quite some time now that the main event of WrestleMania 34 will be Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns for the Universal championship. The WWE has been booking Lesnar as an unstoppable champion, making his F-5 finisher as devastating as possible. The company is looking to crown Reigns as the face of the company for the fourth time in as many years.

One of the ways to make Lesnar vs. Reigns at WrestleMania 34 is to have “The Big Dog” win the 2018 Royal Rumble Match. It will be the second in Reigns’ career but the WWE should be cautious because Philadelphia fans have been very unkind to “The Guy.” When Reigns won the 2014 Royal Rumble Match in Philly, he was showered with boos by the crowd. The early elimination of crowd-favorite Daniel Bryan did not help, as well as an appearance from The Rock.

According to Cageside Seats, the WWE is not expected to use the Royal Rumble Match to set up the Roman Reigns vs. Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 34. The report noted that it is likely that a SmackDown Live superstar is going to win the 2018 Royal Rumble Match and he will challenge for the WWE championship at WrestleMania 34. Borussia Dortmund vs SC Freiburg live

A difficult ten days have seen Borussia Dortmund give up their unbeaten start to the season, drop points in the league for the first time and struggle to break down lower division opposition on the German Cup.

Jurgen Klopp’s men now return to the Westfalenstadion where they have so far proven infallible this campaign, and where their last outing saw them fire six past Hamburg.

Facing them will be last season’s Bundesliga surprise package, SC Freiburg, who finished in fifth position and were merely a last day defeat to Schalke away from a spot in the Champions League qualifiers. However, this term has been rather more difficult for manager Christian Streich, his side having failed to win in their opening six matches and languishing in 17th position.

The pair met twice last season, with Die Borussen emerging victorious on both occasions. A trip to the Black Forest last October saw Dortmund run out 2-0 winners, whilst the return visit in Dortmund saw the home side claim a 5-1 win, striker Robert Lewandowski netting twice. Freiburg’s previous two visits to the Westfalenstadion also witnessed handsome home wins, with BVB emerging as 4-0 winners in 2011-12 and 3-0 victors in 2010-11.

As such, all signs point to another home win for BVB, presently the Bundesliga’s highest-scoring side; Freiburg’s young defence, featuring 20-year-old Christian Gunter and the highly-rated 19-year-old Matthias Ginter will need to be at their best to withstand the Borussia barrage.

When: Saturday, September 28 at 9:30 a.m. ET (3:30 p.m. CET)

Where: Westfalenstadion, Dortmund.

Watch: Sky Bundesliga 1, Canal Sport Plus

Borussia Dortmund vs SC Freiburg live

After a difficult period away from the club with both Real Madrid and Liverpool, the Turkish international playmaker is now back with BVB, having joined on an 18-month loan in January, and is back in excellent form.

With Ilkay Gundogan missing due to injury, Sahin has returned to his former stage at the base of midfield, dictating play from deep as an Italian-style regista, and the 25-year-old has been crucial to Jurgen Klopp’s side’s good start to their league campaign. Having started in their opening five matches, Sahin played just the second-half at Nurnberg last weekend, but with only a draw forthcoming, he’ll be expected to start once more on home soil.

With his intelligent passing, astute positioning and ability to dictate the tempo of the entire game, Sahin and his excellent left foot will look to supply Messrs. Lewandowski, Reus and Mkhitaryan with the kind of incisive forward passes that will create scoring opportunities for them to thrive upon. In the last encounter between the two sides, Sahin helped himself to two goals and an assist in an imperious performance and he’ll be looking for similar again.

Borussia Dortmund vs SC Freiburg live

Freiburg Player to Watch: Gelson Fernandes

A new arrival at the Mage Solar Stadion this season, Gelson Fernandes has enjoyed something of a journeyman’s career thus far, having already played in six different countries for eight different teams.

The 27-year-old midfield destroyer made the move to the Bundesliga and Christian Streich’s side during the summer and the 44-cap Swiss international has already gone on to make himself an integral part of the Brazilians of Breisgau, playing every minute of every Bundesliga game thus far this season, having arrived for a mere £350,000 from Sporting Lisbon.

Sitting in front of the defence, Fernandes’ ability to shut down opponents with speed and tenacity, allied with his tough-tackling nature, will ensure he’s key against Jurgen Klopp’s lightning quick attack. If Freiburg are to leave with anything, the former Manchester City and Udinese man will need to be on top of his game.
Borussia Dortmund vs SC Freiburg live

Dortmund had started the season in top form with five wins from their first five Bundesliga matches, not to mention their Super Cup win over Bayern Munich. However, the last ten days have proven rather more difficult, with a 2-1 defeat against Napoli in the Champions League, a 1-1 draw at Nurnberg last weekend and having needed extra-time to see off second-tier 1860 Munich in the DFB Pokal on Tuesday evening.

Nevertheless, with Freiburg struggling at the start of the new campaign, having drawn three and lost three of their opening six matches, the Bundesliga top scorers will expect to get back to winning ways and with a certain degree of comfort.
